  • “Oops, you reached the rate limit. Please try again later.” Might be throttling or capacity pressure, not a permanent ban 🙂
  • “The service is temporarily unable to process your request. Please try again later.” Similar to 429 too many requests or no-capacity response.
  • “Rate limit exceeded” in chat or CLI. Hit the short-term burst limit, even if your subscription is still active.
  • Request too large / context too large. Happens when prompt, context, or chat history is too big for the current request. Might be generated by huge mcp serwers requests or some edge cases when You load a lot of data. Verify your tools / mcps and surroundings.
  • Model unavailable / capacity issue. Some models like heavy reasoning ones or preview may hit limits sooner than others.

Why changing the model helps ?

Changing from one model family (vendor) to another (like GPT -> Gemini) often hits different capacity pools. GitHub explicitly says model switching can help when you are rate limited, and the chat UI supports changing models or using auto selection. Moving from one model to Opus ( expensive one, less, use, more capacity ) removes the error.

  • Prompt tokens exceeding the model limit, with a message like model_max_prompt_tokens_exceeded and a prompt around 402,604 tokens versus a limit of 272,000.
  • Unlimited 0x consumer copilot access still has undisclosed throttles and that heavier models or edit/agent modes can hit them sooner.

How to deal with it

A practical workflow is:

  1. Wait a bit and retry. Temporary rate limits should clear quickly.
  2. Switch the model. Try Auto, then a different vendor family, then a lighter model.
  3. Shorten the prompt/context. Split the task, remove unnecessary files, or start a fresh chat if the context is huge.
  4. Compress and remove obsolete. Tell the model to compress context and dump old data.
  5. Slow down bursts. Rapid-fire completions or agent loops can trigger throttling. Rethink the prompts so you won`t have to ask additional small simple questions. Requests quota will hit faster.
  6. Update copilot and the editor. Update agents especially when model routing changes.
  7. Ask support if it keeps happening under normal usage.

A simple rule of thumb

If the error disappears when you switch from GPT to Opus or Sonnet, treat it as a capacity/rate-limit workaround, not a real fix. That means the underlying issue is likely the model pool, not your project. It is useful in the moment, but if it happens often, you should reduce context size, break tasks apart, and rotate models more deliberately.
